Actual Can Pictured In OI Masterwork

“Genesee 12 Horse Ale.  Circa: Mid – Late 1935.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists Patent Pending and was filledy by The Genesee Brewing Company Incorporated of Rochester, New York.  Notice the large can opener printed on the near-right side panel.  Note also, the IRS permit number “Permit No. U 219″, printed on the near-left side panel, and the New York State Alcoholic Beverage Control Board license number “License No. D 29″, printed on the far-right side panel.  This Grade 1/1+ example was acquired in the early 1960s by the author from the Wehle family, owners of the Genesee Brewing Company, and is one of only fifteen or so quality examples known to the author.  Rarity Rarity: R-7/R-5.”  REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM KEVIN C.  ”Jacob Rupert Bock Beer.  Circa: Early 1937.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists Patents Pending and was filled by Jacob Ruppert Brewing Company of New York, New York.  Notice the New York State Liquor and Alcohol License number “N.Y.S.L.A.LIC.No. D1″, printed near the bottom of the left side panel.  Note also, the MPC “10A “X” (refer to (Figure C) on page X}, printed at the bottom-center of the right side panel.  This rarely seen bock package design continued to be printed in over the following two years in a similar design, however; without an opening instruction panel.  This Grade 1 – example is one of only two examples known to author, with the other in a lower Grade 2 condition; and a quality, Grade 1 example is not known to exist. “Jacob Rupert Bock Beer.  Circa: Early 1937.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists Patents Pending and was filled by Jacob Ruppert of New York, New York.  The USBC-OI master work incorrectly identifies this package design as having been filled by Jacob Ruppert “Brewing Company”, when in fact, the words “Brewing Company” do not appear anywhere on the container.  This additional detail is provided for documention and informational purposes.  All other information for this package design, as identified in the master work, remains valid. “A-1 Pilsner Beer.  Circa: Mid 1949 – Early 1950.  This Pacific Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists no patent information and was filled by Arizona Brewing Company, Incorporated of Phoenix, Arizona.  This is a similar package desgin as seen on the previous page with, however; the smaller sized stars surrounding the eagle on the face panel.  Note also, the Pacific Can  Company’s tradmark term “Kan-Keg’s”, printed on the far-right side panel.  As far as beer cans having opening instructions goes, this trademark was only seen on this A-1 Beer variation, along with Becker’s Best Beer variation, seen later within this reference guide.  This Grade 1 example is one of only six quality examples known to the author, along with another eleven or so lesser condition examples existing also.  Rarity Rating: R-8/R-7.”  REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM KEVIN C. “A B C St. Louis Select Pilsner Type Beer.  Circa: 1938 – 1940.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists 2 Pats. – Others Pending and was Brewed and Canned by A. B. C. Brewing Company of St. Louis, Missouri, U. S. A.  Notice “A B C” has returned to larger sized lettering and the content information has changed to “12 FL. OZS.” on the face panel.  The Missouri State Permit number is no longer printed on the container.  Note also, the trademark appears in black print above the patent information, at the top of the right side panel.  This Grade 2 example was the best one made available to the author during his photo sessions.  There are, however; at least two quality examples known to the author, along with many lesser condition examples exisiting also.  Rarity Rating: R-9/R-4.”  REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM KEVIN C. “A B C St. Louis Select Pilsner Type Beer.  Circa: Early 1936.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists Patents Pending and was filled by A. B. C. Brewing Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri.  Notice the trademark “Keglined” and the works “Trade Mark Am. Can Co.” , printed within, at both the top and near the middle of the right side panel, all in red.  Note also, the clever use of the “A B C” brand name in “A Better Canned Beer”, on the left side panel.  This short lived package design was the first A B C label used by the brewer, and was known to exist by the author, but an example was not confirmed until September 2004.  This package design is similar to the more commonly seen package design as seen on page 4 of the USBC-OI master work, which was later reissued in 1937.  This Grade 2+ example is the best of only seven examples known to the author, the first of which was brought to his attention by fellow Rust Bunch BCCA Chapter Members John Kotteman and Bob Lavelle, following the release of the master work.  The other six examples range from Grade 3 to Grade 4 condition and a quality, Grade 1 example may not exist.  Rarity Rating: R-8.”  REPRINTED WITH THE PERMISSION FROM KEVIN C. “A B C St. Louis Select Pilsner Type Beer.  Circa: Mid – Late 1937.  This American Can Company, 12 ounce container, lists Patents Pending and was filled by A. B. C. Brewing Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri.  The USBC-OI master work identifies the trademark “Keglined” as having been printed completely in red on the right side panel, when both red and black paint were used in the printing of this trademark.  Notice the words “Trade Mark Am. Can Co.” are printed in black within this trademark, which differs from the similar package design introduced on the previous page.  This package design, with the unique checkerboard style opening instructions, was re-introduced by the brewer from mid to late 1937 after this specific label had been initially retired by mid 1936.  All other information for this package design, as identified in the master work, remains valid.  Rarity Rating: R-8/R-5.”  REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM KEVIN C.
